This large-scale painting on paper by James Little offers an idiosyncratic look at the artist’s methodical and time consuming painting practice. Little is mostly known for creating thickly layered works on canvas, which can take as long as six months to create, as layer after layer of homemade encaustic paints or raw pigment are applied to the surface. Here, we see a lighter approach, with the artist building up layers of raw pigment on a much different type of surface. We see painterly brush marks within the colorfields, and a pearlescent illumination of the surface as light penetrates and reflects off the variously-hued surface in shifting ways. The materials and methods of this paintings creation offer a unique perspective on Little’s instantly recognizable, abstract geometric visual language.
