Ezekiel was a prophet in the Bible who had a celestial vision of God. Ezekiel's view of the Milky Way is marked in this painting by the presence of a doily, which Meko also uses as a signal or indicator for his own Southerness. “These things are here as my reminder of what is home,” Meko says. Meko recalls a conversation with his dad, in which his dad pointed out that Ezekiel was fasting and likely was weak and hungry, and thus liable to see all kinds of things. Thinking about the science of the human body, and the reality of human weakness, this painting reflects on how small one person can be in the grand scheme of things. The figure sits isolated by a fire, awaiting a transformative moment, surrounded by the vastness of a massive heaven looming overhead. They may feel that they are alone, yet we, the viewer, crouched down in our fugitive view, are looking down on them, absolutely watching them in their sacred moment.
