The Chess Game depicts white and black chess pieces strewn about within a field of squares. In the center is a chess board. The squares and cubes around the board occasionally dissolve into geometric abstract patterns and shapes. On one level, Beck is playing with the connection the games of chess and checkers have with the presence of the grid within abstract art history. On another level, he is dealing with the notions of history and humanity as they intersect with strategic games of conflict. “Chess is a metaphor for conflict,” says Beck, “but not all conflict is war. In both instances it’s about contrast.”
