This colorful, multi-panel painting is the latest in Beverly Fishman’s series of highly-polished Pill Reliefs, which utilize pharmaceutical forms as the basis for seemingly abstract compositions. Made with urethane automotive paint and medium-density fiberboard (MDF), this work amalgamates the shapes of pills for pain, birth control, and ADHD—a chemical cocktail. Two of the forms are divided into partial segments, a reference to the practice of austerity so many people engage in, taking only part of their pill when they cannot afford to refill their prescription. Integral to the concept of this work is the presence of voids in some of the pill forms. Nicknamed “Missing Doses,” these pieces engage the vacant, interior spaces with color and light. With this series, Fishman is drawing connections between the transformative power of pharmaceuticals and the transcendent potential of visual art, suggesting people use both as an avenue through which to seek the sublime.
