The woman in this portrait by Alfred Conteh works for the Atlanta public school system as a bus driver, and she’s also a mother. “This is a piece that’s about grace,” Conteh says. “There’s no allegory. I just liked her face. She has a regal presence about her that I wanted to capture. This is a dark skinned, beautiful Black woman, full lips. She’s emblematic of a Black woman being present and grateful in this environment of mess that we deal with. She’s damaged but she is still standing.”
