Rewind Collective b. 2018

Overview

Rewind Collective, conceived 2018, is an anonymous, transnational activist art collective of photographers, fine artists, and digital creatives dedicated to confronting inequities in the contemporary art field. Through the production of new digital artworks that respond to existing works from art history, the collective seeks to "rewrite narratives of visibility" by uplifting women and other marginalized artists whose contributions have historically been overlooked. Rewind's work bridges art history, digital media, and critical inquiry, posing incisive questions about authority, representation, and institutional power.

Noting that the twenty most expensive artworks in the world are by white men, Rewind Collective asks: "Is it time to rewind back the patriarchy, misogyny, and segregation and shine a light on those who deserve to be seen and heard?" Central to the collective's theory of practice is the idea that technology-especially digital imaging and emergent media-can serve as a tool to bring entrenched inequities into focus for viewers, collectors, curators, and institutional decision‑makers. In projects such as their Remember Us series, the group deploys images of historical artworks alongside digitally altered portraits of artists in their studios, blending and re‑centering figures traditionally excluded from the Western art historical canon.

Rewind Collective has presented a number of solo exhibitions internationally, including Rewind Collective at The NFT Gallery in London; Constellations at W1 Curates, London; Remember Us at Vital Voices in Washington, DC; Pixelated Heroes at Makerspace, New York; and Sommergäste: Rewind Collective at BASTIAN Gallery in London.

The collective's work has also been featured in major group exhibitions such as MENASA+: Thresholds of Representation, Kavi Gupta ; Matter of Fact: Material as a Political Act  Kavi Gupta (2025); My Body My Business at Sotheby's (New York); Abstraction & Social Critique at Kavi Gupta; Trailblazers: Centuries of Female Abstraction at Christie's (New York); Block Party: Encountering NFTs in the Middle East at Christie's (Dubai); and She Came to Stay at Andrea Festa Fine Art (Rome).

Rewind Collective's digital interventions have garnered attention in global media and art press, contributing to broader conversations about digital art, and equity in cultural institutions. Their work has been discussed in outlets such as ArtsyArtNet NewsHyperallergicForbes, and The Art Newspaper, where commentators note the collective's provocative engagement with historical narratives and the politics of representation.

At once conceptual and activist, Rewind Collective continues to expand the possibilities of digital art practices while advocating for a more inclusive and equitable art historical canon.
