MAP: WHERE TO SEE 5×5’S PUBLIC ART THIS WEEKEND

Sarah Anne Hughes, DCist, September 5, 2014

D.C.’s citywide public art event, 5×5, begins this weekend.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that free tickets for two guided bus tours this Saturday, and a fancy reception tonight at the Capitol Skyline Hotel, are gone.

You can wait until September 20 for a bike tour led by BicycleSPACE, Adventure Residency Program founder Calder Brannock and 5×5 artist Marley Dawson. (RSVP here.) Or you can venture out on your own this weekend, with a little help from the below map.

Five curators each selected five artists to create public art installations across the city that will be in place until the end of December. Below are the curators and the events taking place this weekend to launch their installations.

  • Lance Fung’s Nonuments exhibition features artists Jonathan Fung, Cameron Hockenson, Peter Hutchinson, Naranjo Morse and Jennifer Wen Ma. An opening reception will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at an empty lot next to a CVS located at 900 4th Street SW. See more events here.
  • Shamim M. Momin brings her Los Angeles Nomadic Division to D.C. with artists Diana Al-Hadid, Dan Colen, Brendan Fowler, Glenn Kaino and Marianne Vitale. An opening reception will take place tomorrow from 5 to 8 p.m. at Naval Building 170 (200 Tingey Street SE). See more events here.
  • Stephanie Sherman’s Near Futures features artists Ali Momeni, Agustina Woodgate, Mia Feuer, Jace Clayton and collective Dignidad Rebelde. Dignidad Rebelde will host a screen printing workshop tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. at First and N Street in NoMa. “Take home free poster prints featuring images from their new NoMA printworks mural, [which] looks back on NoMA’s indigenous histories, and considers how today’s gentrification and housing policies affect futures for neighborhood youth.” See more events here.
  • Justine Topfer’s (home)land features artists Marley Dawson, Abigail DeVille, Kota Ezawa, Sanaz Mazinani and Soda_Jerk. An opening reception for Mazinani‘s U.S.A.I.R.A.N project will feature a musical performance by Parnaz Partovi from 4 to 6 p.m. at R. L. Christian Library (1300 H Street NE). See more events here.
  • A.M. Weaver’s Ceremonies of Dark Men features artists Donald E. Camp, Larry Cook, Isaac Diggs, Stan Squirewell and Michael Platt. The project will kickoff Sunday with spoken word and open mic at Hillyer Art Space (9 Hillyer Court NW) from 2 to 4 p.m.
