Theaster Gates
My Labor Is My Protest

In this film, Theaster Gates explores the genesis of his first exhibition in London, My Labor is My Protest. Touching on the importance of his interest in "found knowledge", materialised here in some 15,000 books obtained from the Chicago based Johnson Publishing Company, he discusses topics such as the history of the civil rights movement, the locus of power within different communities and, most emphatically, the influence of his father on the work in this exhibition.
